Suzuki Weekend Away – the Numbi Hotel, Hazyview, 29 June – 1 July 2018
The Suzuki Weekend Away is running into its eighth year this year, and promises to be the same good fun as the last seven years. If anyone reading this has met the Suzuki South Africa crew, you will know that they are not your traditional corporates. The event is open to any brand of motorcycles, although we imagine that there will be a mild degree of teasing involved for those not on Suzukis.
Like previous years, the Weekend Away is being hosted at the famous Numbi Hotel in Hazyview, a short ride from the gates of the Kruger and amongst some of the best riding roads in the world.
The Weekend Away starts on Friday when people arrive at their leisure. Friday night is a braai and social meet and greet with some fun and games to get things started.
On Saturday, Weekend Away participants are split into two person teams, either one bike or two, but you are welcome to all ride together if that is preferred. Each two person team completes a prescribed route from easy clues and directions for around 250km during the day. On the way they find bases with some very difficult games to score points for their team.
Weekend Away Games have been known to be: “Bikers Jenga” where you play in full riding kit including gloves on the edge of Long Tom Pass in the wind. “The Smarty Suck” where contestants suck a smarty onto the end of a straw and run across a jumping castle to drop into a tub on the other side. And “The Blow Dart Challenge” in the wind on the edge of a road somewhere. As you can tell, this is all hardcore biker stuff.
All Weekend Away Games are “carefully” managed and scored. and a distance score for the closest is applied. Speed is not rewarded and you all ride your own pace with whomever you wish. Suzuki has medics and sweep vehicles on the route and a tracking system making sure all participants are as safe as possible.
For people wanting to do more riding, there is a road route and a route with some adventure bits through the mountains for the adventure bikes.
On Saturday afternoon when you get back there is a demo fleet of bikes and cars waiting to be tested with a carpark party for those who want to join in. Saturday night has a great dinner and prize giving with a Fun Quiz after for more prizes.
Sunday morning is the day to head home but for those who wish there is a ride route available
There is a meeting point at ALZU on the way up on Friday and back to ALZU on Sunday and luggage transport can be arranged with Suzuki.
