SA’s Odendaal and NTS to join Moto2 in 2018
Today, Japanese chassis specialist NTS, together with Swiss motorsport engineering company Geo Technologies, made the official announcement that they will be joining the Moto2 World Championship full time in 2018 after two years of development in the CEV Championship in Spain.
Where this becomes exciting for us is that multiple South African Supersport champion Steven Odendaal will be one of their full time riders. “I am very happy to announce my plans for next year,” commented the 24 year-old on the MotoGP.com website. “And I am very grateful for this opportunity to represent NTS and Geo Technology in the World Championship and also to collaborate with RW Racing. I think, together, we will bring a great package to show what NTS is capable of on the world stage. I would like to thank everyone who has been behind me, supporting me on and off track and everyone who has made this project possible.”
Odendaal has been competing in the CEV Championship with NTS this year, after winning it last year on board a Kalex. He is currently lying third in the standings, and is showing gradual improvement having taken podiums in the last four rounds.
He and NTS competed in the World Championship for the first time last weekend with a wild card entry at the Aragon round. The weekend started well on Friday when he finished in the top ten for both of the practice sessions that took place in mixed weather conditions. The sunshine on Saturday and the race on Sunday proved more difficult for the team after they crossed the finish line in 24th place.
With more development to come, next year looks more promising for Odendaal and his 2018 team mate, American Joe Roberts. Either way, together with Brad Binder, South Africans can look forwarding to cheering on two riders in the Moto2 Championship next year.
