Mechspec Racing’s electric motorcycle demo day
Mechspec Racing is an off-road and adventure bike workshop based in Barbeque Downs, Kyalami, that has been running since 2016, and is run by Matthew Gregory with his team Claudia Grant, Edward and Maxine. They have managed three Roof of Africa race teams in the last three years, and registered as a bike club in 2016.
“We approach Mechspec Racing as a social community in the biking arena, with a workshop included,” said communications manager, Claudia Trzebiatowsky. “Matt and I both have dirt bikes and adventure bikes and try get involved in different riding groups as much as possible. We set the workshop up to be a destination and we use it for events and team meetings, early morning boxing, MotoGP etc. The workshop has big screen tv’s, free wi-fi and we can cater.”
Towards the end of last year, Andrew Kloppers, a friend of Mechspec and a fellow rider, started a business called Electron Powersports importing electric motorcycles to SA. They have now arrived and Mechspec Racing, together with Factory Racing in the south, is one of two appointed dealers in Gauteng.
The electric motorcycle brands available are Kuberg, Electric Motion and Meijs Motor Man. Electric motorcycles, particularly the off-road variety, do make sense, especially for people living in urban areas where finding an open veld or track is quite literally a trek. An electric bike means finding the closest bit of open land, even ones surrounded by houses, and having at it. Also, electric bikes have a unique quality that gives them their own style of excitement. If you have never ridden an electric bike, read on.
