Impala Rally 2019, Hartbeespoort, this weekend 8-10 March
The Hartbeespoort Holiday Resort has become a hive of activity this week in preparation for the 38-year-old rally, with the same Hartbeespoort Resort for the past 16 years.
From this year there are new organisers, No Rules MCC, whose main branch is Hartbeespoort but with branches throughout the country. Interestingly, some interpreted it as being a rally with no rules and anything goes, which of course it isn’t with organisers experienced in organising events and expecting a happy, peaceful, fun weekend.
There was again a well-attended Voortrekker Braai on the Wednesday for early arrivals to get to know each other, and a steady stream of early arrivals seemed to indicate a good final turnout.
The Impala started life as the Skunk Rally in 1977, as a sort of oblique good-natured mock of the then Buffalo and Rhino rallies. It changed to Impala from 1978 and was a “bushveld” rally 40km northwest of Pietersburg, a far cry from the present modern Hartbeespoort Resort with five pools, of which one is heated, 3 Big Water Slides, a Jacuzzi, a Putt-Putt course, a golf driving range, braai facilities everywhere, picnic areas, an elevated Sky Lounge with cocktail bar, jumping castles, trampolines, a complete skate park for bicycles and skateboards and also the odd inebriated biker.
Highlights of this year’s rally will include a large marquee with various live entertainment, plus prizes for competitions like Impala Voice, longest distance, a slow race, tyre throwing, Miss/Mrs Impala, Miss/Mrs Wet T-Shirt, Mr G-String, a doughnut competition, a concourse, a R5000 prize for the biggest club and a R20,000 lucky draw first prize.
This new Impala Rally should be fun, with a new take on it. We are looking forward to seeing it happen.
Entries can be done at the gate for R220 per person. Below is a link to download the programme and below that is a map to the venue.
