Fire It Up Review: The cleanest Triumph Speed Triple in the world
Much like we have already seen on The Bike Show TV show, the website version will be doing a weekly road test of one of the models on the floor of Fire It Up, the famous motorcycle dealer in Fourways. With more than 100 models arriving and leaving their showroom every month, there are a lot of interesting bikes to look at, and this week we found something you could eat your breakfast off of.
The Triumph Speed Triple R is not only fantastic, but also iconic. It was the bike that made the modern concept of naked streetfighters cool. It put forward the idea of mean, manic hooligan machines. And it has only got better.
This is a 2016 Speed Triple R with 23,000 km on the clock and an Arrow exhaust to further trumpet that soul-shaking triple sound. It produces 140hp, has RBW throttle with all the modes, all the electronic aids and Öhlins suspension to help you not need any of that stuff.
It rides like a dream, it handles like a dream, and it feels like a dream. This is the age of modern motorcycles, where 23,000 km is hardly a blip on the radar. In fact, it is probably only just run-in.
But that’s not what makes this motorcycle genuinely remarkable. What makes this exact motorcycle, the one sitting on the Fire It Up floor right now, truly stand out is that it is probably the cleanest Speed Triple in the world.
The word “cleanest” is often used as a euphemism for a bike in good condition, and this bike is in excellent condition, but it is also literally the cleanest Speed Triple in the world. That sounds unlikely because surely it was cleaner when it had, say, no kilometres on the clock as they first wheeled it off the production line? The answer is no.
When it left the production line, there were still traces of dust, finger marks and residue subtly left behind from the production process, but this bike has none of that. It is surgically clean.
The reason for this breakfast eating hygiene is that this bike took a trip through the Fire It Up detailing process, meaning their specialist lady stripped the entire motorcycle down and painstakingly cleaned every single component until it gleamed. Because simply gleaming is not enough, she also ceramic coated them, meaning they now literally sparkle with cleanliness.
There is not a spot, a speck or anything other than faultlessly clean. Genuinely, even looking inwards around the shock, the sprockets and swingarm reveal nothing but shiny perfection.
Even the specks that did appear after the ride were effortlessly removed with the aid of some water. This is the joy of ceramic coating – not only does it look better than new, but it repels dirt, water, oil and everything that might try to attach itself to it. It will also help protect the body from scratches, UV penetration and children with sticky fingers.
This is the cleanest Speed Triple R in the world, and it is on sale for R109,888.
