Brad Binder qualifies on the front row for Assen
Brad Binder had his best qualifying session of the year at Assen when he was able to put his Red Bull Ajo KTM machine in second place on the grid for today’s Moto2 race. This has been a storming weekend for the South African after he was fastest during Friday practice and now achieving his best grid position. This comes after two dismal weekends for the KTMs at Mugello and Catalunya where Binder struggled even to finish in the points.
Much of the newfound speed is surely down to setup changes on the KTM Moto2 bike, but some of it has to also be attributed to Assen itself, a circuit whose flowing layout means riders have a variety of options for lines and styles, so the difficulties of the KTM can be overcome.
“Today was a great day, it’s been a while since we were so high up in qualifying. I’m happy because it’s been a positive weekend so far, much better than the previous rounds. I want to thank the whole team and KTM for all their work, I think we’re going in the right direction. There is still a lot to do but now we are much closer. I’m really looking forward to the race getting started tomorrow; I want to see if we can take advantage of this good result in qualifying and push for a positive position in the race. Tomorrow morning we’ll try to finish tuning the set-up of the bike in order to be 100% prepared and to be able to give it our best.”
We hope that this pace in practice and qualifying can be replicated in race conditions, as we have seen that stringing together 24 fast laps is usually more challenging that doing just one.
The race starts today at 12:20.
